“16 tons” is a live bootleg song that was given to Sam from a fan named “Gator”. Here is how the story goes:

“A one legged guy hobbled up to me, at a recent show, saying he had a phone recording of part of the 2015 Athens Forth of July Fest... which I did as THE SHAWN WILCOX BAND (an alter ego I sometimes hide behind).  He said, he had a copy of a swamped up "16 Tons" that I could have.  I thanked him and asked his name.  He said, "Folks call me Gator", and limped back to his seat.”​
